Robbing the Observatory
advertisement
(Requirement: You have to have a fresh game OR start anew. Either way, it's worth it!)
When you're at the Observatory, start exploring, and you'll find red treasure chests. Usually, if you open them, that's it. When you get back after falling umpteen feet to an assumed death, look around AGAIN. Lookie here, closed red treasure chests! (Hint: On L1 of the Observatory, look near the stairwell. If you look hard enough BEFORE falling like a lead weight, you'll be able to get a Seed of Life. So, when you ride The Starflight, go back to it, and get said seed again! Pretty sweet deal, eh?

The Legend of Zelda Music
-Go to Quester's Rest and talk to Pavo. Tell her to open the Rapportal (Even if all of your buds hate DQIX). Then, after you see your DS' light is flashing, exit Quester's Rest and Stornway. Listen carefully for Zelda music.
-Also, if you have a Grotto map, find said grotto and enter it. you'll hear the music for dungeons in "Legend of Zelda" games.

Max Out Your Skills
advertisement
How is it possible to max out every skill by the time you reach level 99? Here is a way to start over without starting over and undoing all your hard work: Once a character reaches level 99, you can visit Alltrades Abbey and ask to start over at level 1. Your character will keep there stats they had at level 99, and all the Skill Points you collected, making it possible to create a truly rock hard character (by grinding yourself silly).
Luminary Vocation
Following the game's epic conclusion there is one final vocation to try out, the illusive Luminary. To become one of these esteemed entertainers travel to the Desert Kingdom of Gleeba and enter the Dance Hall. Inside towards the backstage entrance you'll meet the gaudy Applaudia who is willing to train you in her illuminating ways. Simply defeat one Moai Minstrel with the skill "Hot Lick" you may already have this skill from the Minstrel Litheness skills set if not it's not hard to obtain only 4 skill points are needed. Now you may be asking yourself, where to find the Moai Minstrel well, if you haven't begun plumbing the depths of the game's many Grottoes you definitely want to start now. These high level enemies are only located in Grottoes you'll want to look in as many high leveled Grottoes as you can. When you finally locate the enemy it's a simple matter of whittleing down it's HP and then striking the final blow.
Defeat Morag Easily
When in Brigadoom, you will eventually find Morag. Here are a couple quick tips.
*Martial Artists easily gain a CoupDeGrace here.
*If Morag is enraged, you can examine here to see who she is locked onto. Morag will keep attacking this person, so defend him and let the others attack freely.
*Morag can paralyze/put your player to sleep etc. Although the good news is Morag will not usually attack an asleep/paralyzed/tranced player unless she is enraged.

*Some pyschical abilities will not take effect like "Trip of a Deathtime"
Keeping these tips in mind, I beat Morag on my first try.
Item Duplication
You'll need a cooperative partner with a DS and another copy of DQ IX for this cheat. Connect to your partner's game and give him or her any items you want to duplicate. Shut off your game without saving or leaving their world and your partner will retain what you gave him or her -- and your inventory will be unchanged! Connect again and collect your duplicated goods.
Birthday Boost
On your hero's birthday -- which you set at the beginning of the game -- the drop rate for items is increased. Change the DS's internal clock to match the birthday you set to take advantage of this Birthday Boost at any time.
Infinite (-ly Slow?) Money
Create a character, remove the character's armor and sell it. You can do this for infinite money. Mages seem to have the most valuable gear.

Sage Vocation
To unlock the sage vocation, one must travel to Gittingham palace in the ruins of the Gitt Empire. Upon entering, go counterclockwise around the first floor, until you reach a staircase. Go up that staircase, and towards the gaping hole in the floor. Right next to the hole is a bookcase, but not just any bookcase: one of the books is actually an ancient sage sealed into a book! The Supreme Sage tells you that join the ranks of his kind (sages, not books) you must finish off five great trolls with frizz. Best way to do this is to find out how many turns of attacking it takes to kill the great troll, once you've got it down to a certain number, attack all out for a number of turns equal to one less than needed, and then let the mage finish him off with frizz, most likely while protecting him with whipping boy and healing as necessary until the troll dies.
Mini Medal Rewards
Take your Mini Medals to the pirate king in Dourbridge. Collect 80 and hand them over to gain the ability to purchase rare items. After you've given him 80 Mini Medals, he will sell you rare items for -- you guessed it -- Mini Medals.
- 04 - Thief's Key
- 08 - Mercury Bandanna
- 13 - Bunny Suit
- 18 - Jolly Roger Jumper
- 25 - Transparent Tights
- 32 - Miracle Sword
- 40 - Sacred Armor
- 50 - Meteorite Bracer
- 62 - Rusty Helmet
- 80 - Dragon Robe
- 3 - Prayer Ring
- 5 - Elfin Elixir
- 8 - Saint's Ashes
- 10 - Reset Stone
- 15 - Orihalcum
- 20 - Pixie Boots

After giving the pirate 80 Mini Medals you can purchase these items with more Mini Medals:

Jobs & Keeping Weapon Skills

When you maximize a weapon skill, you have the ability to use that weapon and those skills you acquired regardless of what job you decide to become.
So, if you want to put skill points into a weapon, don't change to a job that can't use that weapon until you max it out!

Paladin Vocation
In order to unlock the Paladin vocation, make sure one of your characters knows the warrior ability "Whipping Boy". Go to Gleeba, in the Djust Desert, and enter the Mirage Mahal Palace. Go on the roof, head North, and talk to Brunhild. You'll receive the quest "Taking Soul Control", a quest in which you need to successfully use "Whipping Boy" ten times. This quest is probably the easiest for unlocking other vocations, it's possible to complete it in a single battle. Go in the desert, and try to engage a battle with Axolhotls. They usually come in groups, and they usually attack weaker characters in your party, so simply use Whipping Boy on the weakest character you have, have the other characters defend, and you'll complete the quest in only one battle. Go back to Brunhild, and you'll unlock the Paladin Vocation!
Ranger Vocation
In order to unlock the Ranger vocation, make sure you have a character with the ability to use knives. Next, go southeast of Dourbridge, in direction of Zere Rocks. Before entering the forest that leads to Zere Rocks, talk to Odval. She'll give you the "Ranger Changer" quest. This quest is pretty easy, simply use the ability "Toxic Dagger" to poison a given amount of Hocus Chimaeras, and let them die by the venom, not the other attacks. They each have about 70 HP in the following forest, so try to calculate the hits you give them and then use Toxic Dagger. After defeating the given amount of Hocus Chimaeras, return to Odval. You'll have access to the Ranger vocation.
Dances
Dances are Party Tricks that continue until cancelled. The following dacnes can be unlocked by performing the actions below.
- Wierd Dance - Talk to a hermit ghost at the entrance of the Bowhole. It consists of awkwardly flailing both arms in unison in semi circles around your character.
- Sultry Dance - Found by talking to a ghost at the bottom of a well in Upover.
Slime Attire
advertisement
Available for creation through alchemy are: Snood (a blue slime helmet); Gooey Gear (a red and green slime torso piece); and slime earrings (which don't affect your appearance at all but go with the set). They are all made out of simple ingredients as well (slime drops, which are item drops from slimes). Wearing the Snood and Gooey Gear together make the character resemble a Slime Stack, especially if no weapons are equipped.
Easy Early Levelling
Early on in the game you can access a place named Quarentomb. In Quarentomb-L1 you can find Metal Slimes. Hunt them relentlessly and (with a little luck) they wont run. You can kill them for an easy 800-1000+ EXP per kill(depending on the monster's level) helping you level up fast, easy and painlessly.
Addition by Aizentaijo: Another easy way to level up your main character is to go solo and enter the area around Alltrades Abbey. Then, fight a slime that happens to be alone, and it will summon an ally before you attack. As long as you can kill one per round the slimes will never run out and they cannot form their slime tower. You can use this trick for an indefinite amount of time, and it can garner a ton of EXP (Grind for about an hour for over 10,000 EXP).
Quick Money and Exp
Grinding can be a pain, but fighting these monsters can really speed things up:
- If you are strapped for cash, the perfect monster for you is the Gold Golem. Located in the "pit" area outside of Gleeba in the desert they are rarely encountered. They give 505 gold a piece.
- Another money tip from matt: Somewhere between the beginning of the game and Zere ( the town with the big tree ) you can find an alchemy recipe for "Gooey Gear." Once you find this and get the Alchemy Pot, you can make this item with 3 Slimedrops ( which are really easy to get from she slimes outside Stornway ), and a "Garish Garb" which can be bought in Coffinwell for 660 gold. You can make "Gooey Gear" for 660 gold and about 5 minutes of your time and sell it at a shop for 2,650 gold. Therefore, you can quadruple your 660 and make easy money in almost no time!
- For experience, fight Metal Slimes. Regular Metal Slimes are found in the dungeon where you fought "Ragin Contagion" (Quarentomb). LIQUID Metal Slimes can be found in the dungeon beneath the stone village. These little puppies drop about 40,000 EXP a piece, so tear 'em apart! Stun them with a stunning attack or the Warrior Cry from a Martial Artist to prevent them from running.

Hidden Room in Observatory
On the lowest floor of the observatory, look for the "T" on the southern side where the the stairs lead up to the next floor. On the Northern side of said "T" is a hidden door with a single treasure chest containing a seed of life. Every little bit helps!
Secret Store
In the little town of Dourbridge there is a hidden shop with some pretty good weapons and armor. All you need is the Ultimate Key and the location of the secret door. If you have the key, simply go to the overpriced "Item" shop and look behind it. In the slanted wall is a cage door that you can open. Go down the stairs in the hidden room and you will find the store.
Exploiting Red Chests and Blue Chests
The differences between Red Chests and Blue Chests is that, while in multiplayer mode, the players from other worlds (guests) can only open blue chests, while the host character can open both chests, and when you save and quit your game then come back, an item will respawn in the blue chests. This can be useful when you find a blue chest with the capacity to spawn a mini-medal!
Armamentalist Vocation
First, make sure Abbot Jack of Alltrades is back to the Alltrades Abbey. Next, go inside the abbey, and near the entrance, you'll find a guy with a red had; that's Windy. Talk to him and he'll give you the "Elementary Training" Quest. This quest is pretty tricky, so you need to be very patient, as it involves Metal Slimes... You need to defeat a certain number of metal slimes, but with a character that used the ability "Wizard Ward" before defeating a Metal Slime. And it must be that very character that must deliver the final blow. The thing is, up to that point in the story, your characters are probably pretty good levels, and the Metal Slimes always flee. So to keep them in battle, you need low level characters. I used two new level 1 characters made in Stornway, and I made them die. You can find Metal Slimes at the Quaratomb, west of Coffinwell. If possible, try to get 2 people dead, and the other 2 characters with low health. Engage any metal slime you see, and use Wizard Ward as soon as you can, and make the other character defend for the rest of the battle. Next, simply attack the Metal Slime until it dies. So remember, Wizard Ward, then attack. After you defeat the given number of Metal Slimes, go back to the Abbey and talk to Windy. You'll have acces to the quite interesting Armamentalist Vocation!

Alchemy Pot
To get access to the alchemy pot, complete the whole story related to the Wight Knight and visit Quester's Rest. Erinn will tell you that she found an interesting thing; The Alchemy Pot! With that, you can create new weapons, armors, accessories, items, etc... Either try your luck, or use recipes. You can get recipes from now on by reading books, talking to certain NPCs or receiving specific sidequests. Start Searching!
Gladiator Vocation
First, make sure Abbot Jack of Alltrades is back to Alltrades Abbey. Next, go downstairs of the Abbey, and talk to the purple guy standing in front of the Inn, he'll give you the "Gladiator Graduator" Quest. All you have to do is defeat a certain number of slimes with a Super High-Tension Dragon Slash. Dragon Slash is a MP-free ability that a few classes can learn, and to achieve super high-tension, you need to Use "Egg On" on the same character multiple times. Note that when your on a tension of 50, there's 1 chance on 2 to successfully achieve super high-tension (tension of 100), but don't worry, just keep Egging On the same character until you achieve this. A quick way to finish this quest is to go to go to Newid Isle, engage and engage a battle with a slime. Chances are, he's not going to be alone, BUT, you must not let the slimes merge into a Slime Stack or a Slime King, as only Slimes count for this quest. Use SNOOZE on every turn to make them sleep, keep egging on the character with Dragon Slash, and use Dragon Slash when the tension is at 100. You can easily finish this quest in only one battle, as most of the time, 3 or more slimes appear in battle. Go back to the Abbey, talk to the purple guy again, and you'll have access to the very powerful Gladiator Vocation!
DQVC - Wi-Fi Shop
The DQVC is a pretty amazing mode in Dragon Quest IX; it lets you download a list of special items, usually rare or unobtainable any other way, with always very good prices, but also, New Quests and Dungeons! Note that the dungeons and some side-quests are real new data compared to the items which are already included in the game's code, waiting to be "released." So, to get access to this fantastic feature, Simply complete the whole Coffinwell-related story, go back to Quester's Rest in Stornwell, and talk to the lady next to the Alchemy Pot. Her name is Sellma, and she's the one responsible for the DQVC. Note: You can only download new stuff once per day, but you get access to the shop at any time within that same day. New downloadables are available everyday starting at 8 a.m.
DailyTreasure
Treasures in jars, barrels, cabinets and drawers may occasionnaly respawn every now and then. Treasures in BLUE CHESTS will always respawn once you save and quit the game, then come back.
